T-Mobile EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution) is a wireless network technology that allows data to be transferred over a GSM network at rates up to 384 kilobits per second (kbps). EDGE is an improvement on the earlier GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) technology, which allowed data transfer at rates up to 114 kbps.
EDGE technology uses a different method of encoding data, called 8PSK modulation, which allows more data to be transmitted over the same radio frequency. This allows faster data transfer speeds without requiring additional bandwidth or new network infrastructure.
T-Mobile EDGE was launched in the US in 2005, and was widely used for mobile internet access before the introduction of 3G and later 4G LTE and 5G technologies. As of 2021, T-Mobile has discontinued support for its EDGE network in favor of faster and more efficient technologies.
